Savitribai is considered to be one of the mothers of feminism in India. She lived in the 1800’s in Maharashtra where she started the country’s first school for girls. She and her husband dug a well in their courtyard for untouchables who where not allowed to use the common well in the village. Throughout her life she worked to improve the lives of girls and women, and against the discrimination of people based on caste and gender. She was also an accomplished poet.
